About us

Why we organise

Most media is not lost in a dramatic disaster. It slips away quietly: a phone replaced without an export, a drive that stops spinning, a box of tapes nobody can play. We write these guides so that does not happen in your house.

What we believe

Finding before buying

An inventory and a naming rule do more for most families than any new hardware. We always start there.

Recoverable over impressive

We favour setups that someone else could restore from a written note, even if they are less elaborate.

Organisation and preservation are different

Browsing a film library and protecting a wedding video need different care. We keep them apart.

How the guides are written

Every guide is written in plain English for households rather than IT departments. Where we mention tools such as ExifTool, digiKam, Jellyfin or TrueNAS, it is because they are widely used and well documented, not because anyone paid for a mention. We are independent and not affiliated with any software, hardware or cloud provider named on this site.

We rely on open standards and published guidance where it exists, including the EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata standards, ISO 8601 dates and the format recommendations published by memory institutions. When technology changes, we revise the guides and note the date in the page information.

We do not test or sell products, and we do not invent figures. Where a choice depends on your circumstances, we explain the trade-offs and leave the decision with you.
